Phil Kwun is a Managing Director and founding member of Sonenshine Partners and the firm’s Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Sonenshine Partners, Mr. Kwun was an investment banking professional in the global media and telecommunications group of BT Alex. Brown and its successor firm, Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown where he focused on the execution of mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Kwun has spent more than a decade advising companies in a broad range of technology-oriented growth sectors on financing matters, corporate strategy objectives, complex recapitalizations, restructurings, and joint ventures. Mr. Kwun has worked with companies at all stages of their lifecycles and is well-connected in high-tech and venture circles. In addition to his activities as an advisor, Mr. Kwun has structured investments in early and mid-stage technology businesses for Sonenshine Partners merchant banking affiliate.
In recent years, Mr. Kwun has advised on the merger of Atrica, Inc., a leading privately held player in the Metro Ethernet space, into Nokia Siemens Networks; the $207 million dollar Section 363 sale of publicly-traded Riverstone Networks, a Layer 2/3 network infrastructure player focused on the Metro, to Lucent Technologies; the $527 million dollar sale of ProQuest Business Solutions, an electronic parts cataloguing business for the automotive industry, to Snap-On; the subsequent $222 million dollar sale of ProQuest Information & Learning, a electronic information referencing business for libraries and schools, to Cambridge Information Group; and the restructuring and merger of NewSouth Communications, a leading CLEC in the Southeastern region of the United States backed by KKR and Wachovia Capital Partners, into NuVox Communications. Mr. Kwun has also worked with a range of software and services leaders in the enterprise software, benefits administration, Operations Support Systems (OSS) and Product Life Management (PLM) sectors.
Mr. Kwun holds a BA with distinction from Yale College and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania where he was elected to the Director’s List. Mr. Kwun is a native of Los Angeles and has been involved with alumni fundraising efforts for the Harvard-Westlake School. He is also a Director of RosettaBooks, a pioneer in the electronic publishing sector..
